An object designed to be fixed asks a different question of its maker than one designed only to be sold.
Most products are shaped by the moment of purchase. They are engineered to look irresistible on a shelf and to feel exciting for the first few weeks of ownership. Designing for repair inverts that priority. It asks not only how an object will be sold, but how it will age, and whether an ordinary person can keep it alive. That single question ripples through every decision: screws instead of glue, standard parts instead of custom ones, a case that opens instead of one sealed shut forever.
The economics have long pushed the other way. A product that lasts is a product not repurchased, and for a century that math favored disposability. But the calculus is shifting, as customers grow weary of landfills full of nearly working things and regulators begin to demand that goods be fixable by law.
The deeper reward is not only environmental but emotional. An object you have repaired becomes an object you have a relationship with — you know its insides, you have kept it going, you are less likely to discard it on a whim. Reparability does not just extend a product life; it changes how we value the things we own.
